The Elimination of Racism

The YWCA supports policies that contribute to the elimination of racism. This includes but is not limited to policies that eliminate racial profiling, increase immigrant rights, retain and strengthen affirmative action, reduce hate crimes and result in increased education on racism and its elimination.

The YWCA supports the maintenance and strengthening of affirmative action laws to protect people from discrimination on the basis of race and gender.

As we remain focused on our mission, the goal of the YWCA Warren is to develop a sound and ongoing racial justice program that serves the community and brings about change. Though the elimination of racism is the language used in our mission statement, we believe that the prejudices that exist within our community go beyond that of simply race, they keep us from truly appreciating the diversity that exists within our community, and sadly prevent us from being a cohesive community.

Frequently when we hear the word diversity, we immediately think of race or gender. However, diversity encompasses far more, such as differences in age, religion, physical abilities, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, intelligence, mental and physical health, behavior and political views. Each and every one of these characteristics makes us unique.

In order to bring change and appreciation of diversity to this community, the YWCA Warren will create a Diversity Awareness Center that brings local groups together to hold support groups and discussions, informative workshops and trainings, study circles and other cultural activities where we can begin to learn about and celebrate the diversity that exists within Trumbull County. We will also, incorporate learning opportunities for youth, whereby we bring in organizations that share a message of tolerance and understanding of diversity and cultural differences to our youth programs.
