NYPUM - National Youth Project Using Minibikes

What is NYPUM?

NYPUM offers youth of America an opportunity to develop self-esteem, values for daily living, and a sense of belonging using the minibike as a motivational tool.

NYPUM is a national youth program using the privilege to ride a Honda minibike as an incentive – motivating youth to make positive changes in their lives. This incentive, healthy peer relationships, and positive adult role models combine to make NYPUM a powerful tool in improving the lives of participants.  Participants earn the privilege to ride minibikes by achieving specific goals in their individual contracts, and adhering to safety standards and rules of the program.

History of NYPUM?

NYPUM began in 1969, with an initial gift of 10,000 minibikes from the American Honda Motor Co., Inc. to the National YMCA.

In 1993, an independent, non-profit public corporation was created called NYPUM. The national structure was reorganized, training programs were implemented, services were expanded, and the national office began to facilitate special events called Rodeos in different regions of the country.

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. continues to make donations to NYPUM with annual grants of minibikes and funding.

NYPUM is helping youth, their families, and consequently, their communities, by teaching children how to meet the challenges of life in a way that will make them healthy, productive members of society.

NYPUM Goals

  • To provide youth with opportunities for success.
  • To prevent destructive behavior (substance abuse, truancy, curfew violations, vandalism, and other delinquent behavior) and to improve behavior at home, in school, and in the community.
  • To teach youth how to be responsible members of their community.
  • To impart to youth a respect and sense of responsibility for the environment.
  • To teach youth how to set and achieve goals, to assume responsibility for their actions, and to understand and accept rewards and consequences.
  • To teach youth how to be responsible members of a team and to teach youth respect for peers and authority figures.
  • To teach skills necessary to proper care of donated minibikes.
  • To provide community members (schools, businesses, individuals, and law enforcement) a way to work together to help their youth.

NYPUM is Safe

The following factors keep NYPUM safe:

  • Minibike instructors must successfully complete a one week, intensive training with NYPUM and become CNIs, Certified NYPUM Instructors. CNIs must maintain their certification and retrain every three years.
  • CNIs understand that NYPUM is a youth program, not a minibike program.
  • NYPUM’s minibike instruction curriculum was developed in cooperation with the Special Vehicle Institute of America, experts in the field of off-road riding.
  • Jumping, racing, “wheelies” and other unsafe forms of riding are NOT allowed.
  • National NYPUM conducts annual quality assurance visits to all programs.
  • Minibikes are never used for more than four years.

How NYPUM Works

NYPUM works to combine individual behavior contracts with classroom curricula instruction, 21 off-road lessons, and trail riding while celebrating the positive milestones of each participant.  The YWCA Warren Certified NYPUM Instructors, Track Safety Supervisors, staff, and volunteers will go beyond the classroom by teaching the youth the lessons they need to take their knowledge to the trails as well as impart major life skills for everyday.

How to Get Involved

Sign up to help - by volunteering, you will show the youth participants they are worth more than your time and energy.  Help the YWCA Warren NYPUM Program create great future leaders and responsible citizens by learning to give back to community programs.

Bring your very own NYPUM Program to your youth  by contacting the YWCA Warren NYPUM Program Director at jwagner@ywcaofwarren.org

Donate an item from our NYPUM "wish list" - all items can be either new or used (in working order).  Thank you in advance for taking the time to consider a gift for the youth in the NYPUM Program.

Sign up to have our youth participants to provide community service at your place of business.  The youth can help by sweeping the parking lot, inventory checks, displaying new products, office tasks, etc...  For more information on community service projects through the NYPUM Program, please contact Jennifer Wagner at 330-373-1010.
